Design Schools:  Please Start Teaching Design Again

My Response:

This article struck me personally as in my undergraduate degree I thought the practical component was lacking. We did much theory and were constantly reminded of it’s underlying importance. My university experience is relevant in this situation as recently, while observing in schools I noticed with a degree of unnerving horror that the year 9 and 10 classes were doing the same type of work I only did in university. Their experience in school is the flipside to my university experience. Design thinking is now my strong point, with a weaker strength in the designing and making stages, while the kids in this school put no thought into their designs, and create without any thought whatsoever.

Though I agree with the point that it’s harder to execute an idea than to have one, after seeing the students in school with no concept of design principles, semiotics, or the meaning of their work in the context in which they create it, I as a design teacher am keen to teach the meaning of design before even thinking about creating. There are many arguments about the visual pollution and meaningless design that is prominent in our world today and I would like to be apart of creating meaningful and ethical designers.
